A Tradition of Clocks at Biltmore
George Vanderbilt understood the importance and beauty of time by gracing Biltmore House with 19 exquisite timepieces ranging from the mid-17th century to the early 20th century. In fact, among the most intricate and varied objects in Biltmore House are the clocks—from the tall-case clock in the Entrance Hall to the massive tower clock on the Stable to the Louis XV clock adorning the mantle in Mrs. Vanderbilt's bedroom. This very special clock is elaborately embellished with porcelain figurines and flowers, believed to be Phillipe Barat's masterpiece, earning him entry into the French Clockmaker's Guild in 1764.
Biltmore™ For Your Home, in partnership with Ridgeway Clocks, is continuing the tradition of bringing clocks into the home by offering a collection of fine quality and beautifully-crafted clocks. Ridgeway considers clocks to be the heartbeat of the home. Since the rhythms of our lives are measured by the ticking of a clock, we tend to agree. So, let's make it a splendid clock.
Let me introduce you to three works of art that happen to keep time.
Carriage House (Wall Clock)
A stable adjoins Biltmore House where a single outdoor clock flanks the center dormer. Along with notifying guests of the proper time while they were enjoying the grounds of Biltmore's estate, this signature piece also served as a "master" clock, which electronically controlled the clocks in the servants' quarters of the home. Replicated for today's indoor and outdoor living spaces, this timepiece will bring an authentic flair to your own home.
Chauncey (Mantle Clock)
Chauncey Beadle served as Superintendent of Biltmore Estate and left a legacy of service, leadership and commitment to the Vanderbilt family. This mantel clock memorializes his life and embodies the rich details of Biltmore House. Inspired by a 19th-century clock on display today in the Music room at Biltmore House, this striking timepiece can serve as a special gift to honor family and friends in your own life.
Vanderbilt Limited Edition (Grandfather Clock)
Inspired by many priceless artifacts from George Vanderbilt's collection, this magnificent timepiece embodies the quality and craftsmanship that is Biltmore. Handcrafted in the United States and finished in Estate Cherry, the solid hardwood case features only the finest American Cherry and Crotch Mahogany throughout. The functioning moon dial is canvassed on one half with an image of the Biltmore House and the opposite half with an image of Biltmore Gardens. The center dial includes a placard individually engraved with a sequential number as each clock is crafted. This heirloom will be limited to only 250 total pieces, coinciding with the number of rooms at Biltmore House.
