The Merits of Fall Planting
If you live in a four-season climate, autumn is a good time for planting perennials and shrubs. In fact, fall is also the best time to plant bulbs that bloom in the spring.
While spring might intuitively seem like a good time for planting, here are reasons why fall is even better.
Root Growth. With winter approaching, plants naturally slow down their growth above ground and focus on growth below the soil. Planting in the fall allows a plant to establish good roots, the foundation of a healthy plant. Soil temperature is warm through the fall and root growth will continue until soil temperature drops below 45 degrees F.
Water Wise. Plants require ample water to establish them. Many factors in the fall minimize the need for extra watering. With shorter days, plants use less water. With lower temperatures, there is less heat to stress plants and less need for water.
Bulb Cycles. Bulbs need a cold period to cycle into a blooming period. Fall planting will yield spring blooming.
Gardener Comfort. Enjoy the cooler temperatures and lower humidity. Milder temperatures make for happier gardeners!
Tips for Perennials, Shrubs, and Trees
Plant Quality. Select plants that are healthy and robust. Purchase from a reputable garden center. Use a garden center that selects plants for your area and is knowledgeable in recommendations for your individual growing conditions.
Plant/Site Compatibility. Match your plant choice with your planting location. Sunlight levels and soil conditions are key factors to address for plant and site.
Soil. Do a soil test and amend your soil as recommended for your planting site. Properly prepared soil will pay off in healthy, robust plants.
Planting depth. Planting too high or too deep impacts plants proper growth. A good rule of thumb is to plant in the ground at the same depth that the plant was in its nursery grow pot.
Good roots. When removing plant from grow pot, loosen the roots. If roots are exposed on the outside of plant root ball in a circular fashion, trim them or loosen to disengage the circular shape.
Water. Give a thorough watering after planting and water when necessary to supply about one inch of water per week. Continue to monitor water needs until the ground is frozen.
Mulch. Add a two to four inch layer of mulch to help prevent soil temperature fluctuations. Apply after soil is cold in late Nov. or early Dec. Shredded bark or straw are good choices.
Tips for Planting Fall Bulbs
Bulb Quality. Purchase bulbs from a reputable source. Bulbs should be plump and firm.
Locale. Bulbs can be planted in a variety of places. Good choices are in beds, under shrubs or trees or in containers.
Good drainage. If your soil is mostly clay or mostly sand, mix in peat moss or compost up to 50% in volume.
Depth. Dig planting holes that are three to four times the height of the bulb you are planting. Tulips and daffodils should be planted approximately eight inches deep.
This End Up. Plant with tips facing up. Cover with soil and then water.
Mulch. Up to a 3 inch layer of mulch will help keep moisture levels consistent. Wood chips, bark or straw are good choices.
